Build me dog, O Lord, one who will be strong in heart even when that heart is failing. Make him brave, with an unbending gaze at death to save the ones he loves. Make him proud and stern in his loyalties, and humble and gentle in the presence of innocence. Make him the stone in my life. My best friend, my protector, and sometimes my pillow. Make him an Alapaha so that he can carry these great deads. O Lord, make him an Alapaha, and let me call him mine.
